Free Seminar and Public Discussion

7-9pm
Wednesday April 15, 2009
Newmarket Public Library

This seminar brings together voices of the change... Mike Nickerson will be leading a discussion about "Life, Illusion and Money, living on earth as if we want to stay." Tara Mae Hillyer will be presenting ideas and concepts of healing ourselves and the the world around us one decision at a time. Together these speakers will highlight areas of finances, social justice and healing in a green era.

More information on Mike Nickerson's Talk:

If personal security is threatened by an economic crisis with undertones of the climate and energy issues, what does it all mean for the children and grandchildren?

While humans are a gifted creature, finding our way out of the present situation requires that we acknowledge how the world has changed. As Einstein
aptly stated: "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

For forty years, Mike Nickerson has been studying the problems and solutions of our times. His study, from outside of institutional molds, reveals how societies
change. Nickerson will facilitate a discussion based on his book "Life, Money & Illusion; Living on Earth as if we want to stay."

In his book, Nickerson explores the implications of attempting perpetual growth on our finite planet. He also outlines ways in which we can adapt to what he
calls the maturation of the human species. "There is a time for growing and there is a time for mature responsibility," he says. "The human family is at the
threshold of a new era and we are feeling adolescent angst as we pine for the carefree growth of childhood."

In the same ways that life doesn't end with individual maturity, there are vast opportunities awaiting a post-growth society. To come of age as a society,
however, we have to deal with the "growth hormone" that makes the economy ill when it is not expanding. The first step is to choose between the goal
of long-term well-being and that of perpetual expansion. It is a Question of Direction.

Come, join us for a presentation and discussion about how we could recreate mutual provision (the economy) in a way that can provide for countless
generations to come.

More Information on Tara Mae Hillyer's Talk:
Our behavior and belief systems continue to disconnect ourselves from each other and from the natural environment which we live in and depend on. It is
time for each and every individual to remember who we are, why we are here and that we have the power to enact the change we are
so desperate for. Disease, mental illness, health problems, pain, anxiety, depression and issues of our physical bodies all stem from the same source.
So many of us want to find the magic cure to our physical and mental health problems. There are answers to your questions, and questions to your answers...
If you are interested in learning how to heal yourself and the world around you, come out to this free seminar and learn to shift your perceptions and open
your eyes to a reality that exists just below the surface of the conditioned lives we live.

Aboriginal Art Show : Seneca

E-mail Print PDF

Feb 20, 2009 Seneca College King Campus hosted their annual Aboriginal Art Show.

A Variety of artists from across Canada (now residing in Toronto) had pieces for sale. From paintings and sketches to textiles, a diverse display of culture was available to students and visitors. The artists all took time to share the meaning, inspiration and cultural influences behind their artwork.

This annual event is only one of many available to the public in Canada and the USA. Below are some links to get you started on our journey to support our communities in developing art, music, dance and culture. Many communities offer public events to share their heritage. Make some time this year to attend at least one event - what a beautiful way to get to know your neighbour...

Say No to GMO - the guide

E-mail Print PDF

Response to Sunday Sermon: With Imagination
I was emailed a link by a reader...
It is a pdf file from Greenpeace outlining the companies and products that use genetically modified ingredients, and what that means to consumers and the environment. This comprehensive list outlines which brands and which products are GMO in Canada. Check it out for yourself  http://gmoguide.greenpeace.ca/shoppers_guide.pdf  and if you do not want to be eating 'food product' without your consent there are calls to action in this guide.
I wanted to provide readers with some background information on genetic engineering, but there so much to tell. I came across an excellent lecture by Author Jeffrey Smith here is the link to the first segment (uses the "other videos by..." to watch the entire series - I highly recommend sitting through the whole thing he has some very interesting points throughout) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94d-KVorSHM&feature=PlayList&p=B97FA36D17428A0F&index=4

Sunday Sermon: With Imagination

"I started with a Dream, but came to a decision..."

How can we judge how far we can go if we do not try?
Four Seasons of Green is about thinking in a completely different way. It is about acknowledging the need for change and actually doing something about it.  That change can be knowing you need help and reaching out for it - and on the other side of that - hearing someone ask for help and providing that support. We are a community that grows stronger by developing relationships within our families, our neighborhoods and our global communities.

Here is your opportunity to decide to start. Think of one issue that touches you. Is it Global Warming? Animal Cruelty? Social Injustice? Religious Conflict? Waste Management? Water? Children's Rights? Poverty?

Now that you have a cause... spend 5 minutes brainstorming about how your actions contribute to the perpetuation of this issue. Write your thoughts down. Select one of the actions you have recorded. How can you transform this action to create a positive impact on yourself and society?

For example...
I read several articles about Nestle's business practices which employ child labour (for Nestle Chocolate), entrap impoverished women to use infant formula (which is mixed with contaminated water and leads to babies dying from diarrhea 2 deaths per minute), and a close to home issue with Nestle bottling Ontario's water and selling it back to us - after depleting and contaminating our resources.-these are only a few of the offenses by Nestle.

How can one person make a difference against a conglomeration the size of Nestle? We joined the boycott over 2 years ago. It is the largest and longest running boycott, and has Global participation.

I encourage you to do your own research. Look at the companies you buy from regularly. Do they use fair trade practices? Do they use slave labour or human trafficking for that product to reach you? What about their environmental standards? How much packaging do they use? Here is a good tip: Buy Local: from a small company you know and trust.

Change is not something that can happen all at once. It is about one small change at a time. Make a choice... make a change. Let that small change settle in, make sure it sticks before you try to make another.
